In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
